The boundary is the product.
Most software that touches giving wants to sit in the middle of the money, because that is where the fees are. Hope Opens deliberately does not.
-
It cannot receive, hold, transfer, liquidate, distribute or receipt a gift.
Those are not settings. They are recorded as fixed values in the software’s own configuration, and a test fails the build if any of them changes.
-
It never collects financial credentials.
No account numbers, no wallet addresses, no card details, no passwords to anything else. There is nowhere in the system to put them.
-
It gives no legal, tax or investment advice.
Every guide says who to ask instead, and says it in the guide rather than in a disclaimer nobody reads.
Why this matters to your board
Software that holds donor money, or that could be mistaken for holding it, brings questions about registration, custody, receipting and liability. Hope Opens avoids those questions by not doing the thing that raises them. Your organization remains the only party that receives a gift, acknowledges it, and answers for it.
What we are still working out
Whether a platform like this needs to register in particular states is a question for qualified counsel, and it is open. We would rather tell you that than imply it is settled.
