Give from assets
Cryptocurrency
Giving digital assets through an organization's approved crypto donation provider, which handles wallets and conversion.
Understand the route
How this gift works
A cryptocurrency gift sends a supported digital asset through the receiving organization’s approved donation provider. The asset, network and receiving destination must match the provider’s instructions. Acceptance of one cryptocurrency does not mean acceptance of every token or network. The organization’s confirmation is separate from a transaction appearing on a blockchain.

Who does what
- You identify the asset and use the approved transfer process.
- The provider supplies current network and destination instructions.
- The organization or provider reconciles the transfer and issues the appropriate acknowledgment.
These guides describe giving in the U.S. The receiving organization’s policies and your provider’s current instructions set the actual process.
Who this may fit
Holders of supported digital assets whose organization has an approved provider.

The route at a glance
- Confirm that the organization accepts crypto and which provider it uses.
- Use only the provider's verified channel; never send to an address received by email or text.
- Keep the provider's confirmation and the organization's acknowledgment.
From intention to confirmation
The process, step by step
Step 1 of 5
Confirm support
Ask whether this specific asset and network are accepted. Use the organization’s approved provider, rather than a wallet address copied from a message or an old webpage.
Review instructions
Read destination, network, minimum, memo or tag requirements and any expiry. Ask the provider to resolve uncertainty before opening your send screen.
Plan documentation
Before transfer, ask your tax preparer about valuation, appraisal and reporting requirements. The provider’s displayed market price may not satisfy every documentation requirement.
Transfer carefully
Compare the network and destination with the current instructions before authorizing. Never share private keys or a recovery phrase with the organization or Hope Opens.
Confirm arrival
Keep the transaction identifier and provider confirmation. Ask whether the gift has been reconciled to you and obtain the organization’s acknowledgment, not just an explorer screenshot.
These steps keep your place in the guide. Confirm progress with the organization and provider.

Ask the organization
- Which provider do you use and how do I verify it?
- Which assets do you accept?
Ask the provider
- Is the asset converted immediately?
- What fees apply, and who issues the acknowledgment?
Ask your advisor
- How is a digital asset gift documented and valued?
Confirm it. Keep the records.
Confirm that the approved provider reconciled the transaction and the gift was acknowledged. A blockchain confirmation alone does not establish that it was matched to your donation.
- The transaction identifier, asset, network and send record.
- The provider’s receipt and organization acknowledgment.
- Acquisition and valuation records, with any required appraisal.
Important distinctions
- A transfer on the wrong network may be unrecoverable. Pause when instructions do not match.
- Do not assume cryptocurrency follows the publicly traded-stock appraisal exception. Obtain advice about the particular asset and claimed deduction.

A few more useful answers
Can I send directly to any charity wallet?
Use only a destination supplied through the organization’s current approved process. Verify how the provider identifies the donor and acknowledges receipt.
Does the charity keep the cryptocurrency?
Ask its provider. Conversion and holding policies vary; the organization may receive cash after the provider processes the asset.
